Somewhat after his summer trip to the headquarters of the Creative Assembly studio and trying out an early build of the game Total War: Rome II, a 24-year-old fan of the series James died of liver cancer. Creative Assembly will immortalize its fan in the game, placing his virtual incarnation in the video game as a soldier of the Roman Empire.
James’s visit to the Creative Assembly studios in Horsham, UK, was made possible with the help of The Willow foundation, a charity that provides "Positive and life-enhancing days" for seriously ill people. James was accompanied by his brother during the visit.
Total War Community Manager Craig Laycock Craig Laycock said he was "devastated" when he learned of James’ death. He recalled his summer visit to the studio, saying that James eagerly asked the developers about the game and was indescribably happy about the visit.
“And yet, without getting the chance to see the release of Rome II, he will still get the chance to be associated with it – albeit as a model in the game." said Mr. Laycock. "And every time I see him, I’ll remember what a great guy he was.

Charity Willow helped 24-year-old Total War fan James realize his dream. Last summer, he became the first person outside of Creative Assembly to personally try the new strategy game Total War: Rome 2. A trip to the developers’ office was organized for James, where he not only played the alpha version of Rome 2, but also talked to the creators of his favorite games. However, one should not envy James – shortly after his visit to Creative Assembly, he died of cancer, and this trip was a kind of parting gift for him.
"James’ enthusiasm knew no bounds. He asked smart questions and gave good advice about certain game features. When I found out that he died, I was very upset. Although I only knew him for a few hours, that was enough time to understand how much he loves our games. He won’t be able to play Rome 2, but we immortalized his memory in the game as a model of one of the soldiers. Every time I see him, I remember what a great guy he was,” said Craig Laycock, Community Manager at Creative Assembly.
